Turkey Day might deliver 2-3 feet of powder to many areas of the West in the 7 day forecast

Summary

Light snow is falling in the northern Rockies. 6 inches was reported today at Big Sky and Bridger in line with the 4-8 I had predicted a few days ago. That system is dropping a cold front over Wyoming and Colorado on Saturday. Significant snow is likely for southern Wyoming with moderate snow for northern Colorado east of the Divide Saturday. The real news is a pattern change that may bring several feet of snow to many areas of the west that have been waiting anxiously for a big dump. Gobbles of Powder may be falling in some spots of the west late next week as your eating your Turkey.

Short Term Forecast

I'm starting off with some long-term good news!  Turkey Day is going to start off a stream of moisture that will impact the west!  The Sierra, Tetons, Cascades, Wasatch, and most of Colorado will likely see snowfall next week.   The 7- day charts are looking really good for many areas, especially the Sierra who could finally see a significant snowfall of 2 feet or more.  Some areas may see 3-5 feet but its way to early to call that!  If so, it would be upper elevations along the Sierra Crest.

Short Term: Colorado is looking at 3-6 inches this Saturday favoring Rocky Mountain National Park and perhaps Eldora Ski area.  NE winds will push lighter amounts towards the Divide (Loveland/Winter Park).   Steamboat may also benefit with decent moisture on the models to the north near the Wyoming border. Its unlikely to push too much further south. The Laramie range and areas east towards Cheyenne will see significant snow (10 Plus). This may be the chase pick this weekend (WYOMING).

Below:  Total snowfall for Colorado and Wyoming through this Saturday night. Bright bullseye over the Laramie range where 12 plus inches will likely fall. Lesser amounts in northern Colorado diminishing as you head south.  The foothills near Boulder or in Rocky Mountain National Park will likely see moderate snow.

Light Snow is likely west of the Divide in Colorado on Saturday.   Don't miss the extended forecast below.

Extended Forecast

Snow will develop at some point in the Cascades mid next week.  That will drop south into the Sierra by Wednesday afternoon.  Snow will continue in the Sierra through Turkey Day.  Additional snow is possible on Friday.  That system will move across Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado late next week.  Several areas of the west that have not seen much snow this season will be seeing snow next week.

The Good:  Pattern of wet and cooler temps likely mid to late next week.

The Bad:    While we see 3-5 feet of snow possible, it's too early to pin any accuracy to amounts yet.

Below:  Total snowfall in the west in the next 7 days (Majority coming mid to late week).

Announcements

Our thoughts go out to everyone impacted by the tragic wildfires.   Special thanks to Tahoe local Silver Serino, owner of Jiffy's Pizza in North Lake Tahoe.  Silver jumped in his truck and chased to the fires picking up dogs to eventually reunite with their owners.  He has several dogs that still need to be reunited.  Fortunately, this moisture will help dampen the wildfires in California. Unfortunately, it may result in significant mudslides.
