Rain Sunday and Monday, then snow seven days later?

Summary:

Expect rain showers Sunday morning/midday and again late Sunday night through Monday. Then Tuesday through Saturday should be mostly dry, with a colder storm for Sunday/Monday the 28/29th.

Details:

Saturday worked out about right, with the northern 1/3rd of Colorado staying dry (north of I-70) while higher amounts of moisture south of I-70 led to afternoon and evening thunderstorms.

Moisture increased a lot since Saturday night, and as the first batch of storm energy is moving through Colorado on Sunday morning, heavy rain showers are falling in a band moving from south-to-north. Areas near and east of Durango received 1-3 inches of rain from this band, and as of 8am Sunday morning the band is stretching from Grand Junction to Crested Butte. Expect rain to fall in Aspen and then north to I-70 through later this morning.

Late Sunday afternoon and evening could turn drier for most mountains as we'll be in between waves of storm energy. Then by Monday morning, another band of energy should create more showers and thunderstorms. Monday won't be a washout, but it'll be mostly cloudy for the mountains with rain showers, so not the greatest of days for outdoor fun.

Tuesday through Saturday will be a different story though, as most of the state will be sunny with temperatures at or above normal. The exception will be on Tuesday in the mountains along and north of I-70 where low-level moisture will lead to lingering clouds and leftover showers. If this were winter, Tuesday morning could be a nice midweek powder day for places like Steamboat and Loveland, but it's still a little early for that:-)

The next storm should affect us on Sunday through Monday with rain showers down low and snow above 10,000-11,000ft. A reinforcing shot of cooler air and storm energy might push into Colorado following this first storm, so the last few days of September and the first few days of October look pretty active. Stay tuned!

PS - the leaves are a-changin'! Some Aspen groves are spotty with large areas of gold and still many areas of green. Other Aspen groves are solid gold. Later this week and next Saturday seems like the prime time to see the leaves, as the storm on the 28th/29th might bring enough wind and precipitation to strip some leaves. Then again, if some groves keep their leaves during the storm on the 28th/29th, there will likely be great views with snow on the higher peaks above the Aspens.
