Snow Measured in FEET

Summary

Nearly every Mountain Collective destination in the Western US has been "in the flow" over the past week, with 7+ FEET for Alta/Snowbird in Utah. Many of the same destinations will receive another round of snow from Friday (2/19) through Sunday (2/21) ahead of the storm track retreating north to start the week of February 22nd. Storm train returns through early March.

If you love snow, you will love the following graphic...

Yes, you're reading that correctly. Alta/Snowbird have received nearly 7 FEET of fresh snow over the past 5 days and heavy snow continues to fall as I type on the morning of February 17th.

I also happen to be staying at the base of Alta, along with much of the OpenSnow team, and, unfortunately, we have not been able to leave our hotel for the past 36 hours due to extreme avalanche danger. This is called "Interlodge" and it does happen from time-to-time. The unique nature of this event is that the 50+ inches of snow over the past 48 hours followed 30 inches over the previous three days. Regardless of the lack of skiing, this is an incredible snow cycle and it truly shows the magic of northwest flow (winds from the northwest) in Little Cottonwood Canyon.

Looking at other destinations over the past week, it's been a powder paradise for Jackson Hole as they have received over 4 FEET in the past 5 days, along with Grand Targhee with 3+ FEET. Taos has also picked up 2+ FEET thanks to the storms sweeping further south into northern New Mexico.

Moving onto the forecast, it will continue to be a party for much of the Western US as multiple storms line up for the northern and central Rockies. Alta/Snowbird and Jackson/Targhee will once again be in the catcher's mitt over the weekend of February 19th through the 21st. Sunday (2/21) or Monday (2/22) will likely be the days to target as the storms clear and they open additional terrain following avalanche mitigation work.

Scanning other destinations, Aspen Snowmass should pick up 5-10 inches over the next 5 days, along with Arapahoe Basin. Colorado was late to the party but they are receiving well-above-average snowfall for February.

For our Japanese friends, the Niseko destinations continue to have a classic winter as wave-after-wave of sea-effect snow rolls into Hokkaido. International travel to Japan is not possible this winter but we can all dream about the magical island of Hokkaido for future winters.

Extended Forecast

Looking ahead to the week of February 22nd, the storm track will shift slightly north to start the week before it quickly targets much of the Western US as we flip the calendar into March.

Revelstoke, Panorama, and Banff Lake Louise should all do well on Monday (2/22) and into Tuesday (2/23), along with a light refresh for Sugarbush in Vermont.

I'll then be watching February 25th and beyond for consistent refreshes across every Mountain Collective destination in the Western US. This has been a tale of two winters as the second half makes up for a lackluster start to the 2020-21 winter season.

As always, stay up-to-date with our team of local forecasters. They will provide you with excellent local analysis and really help you dial in the details with updates every morning.
