Deep (again) in California

The most snow this past weekend fell in California where storm totals were 14-28 inches. Just before Thanksgiving, the base of Alpine Meadows was bare. Not it’s full-on winter thanks to about 101 inches of snow that accumulated in the past two weeks.

Forecast for Mon, Dec 9 – Wed, Dec 11

The first half of this week is going to be free of new snow for most ski areas in North America. The few areas of interest are in Colorado and New Mexico where snow over the weekend should offer freshies on Monday-morning. And after rain on Monday and Tuesday, there could be snow over the mid-Atlantic on Wednesday.

Forecast for Thu, Dec 12 – Fri, Dec 13

The fun will begin on Thursday when a series of storms will target British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. Northern Utah and Colorado may get in on this action starting on Thursday night or Friday.

Forecast for Sat, Dec 14 – Sun, Dec 15

Looking ahead to the weekend, the most intense snow should shift away from the Northwest but it will remain over Colorado and Utah (and maybe hit California as well). If this snow winds up hitting Utah and Colorado, that would make three days in a row with new snow and conditions should be pretty darn good.

Outlook for Mon, Dec 16 – Fri, Dec 20

We are getting close to the busy holiday period of late December, and the longer-range forecast looks pretty good for at least some parts of the west coast and other mountains of the western United States and Canada.

It’s a little too soon to know if one area will be favored for big-time snow from December 16-20, though the temperature outlook does signal cool (and maybe) stormy weather for a lot of the west.
