Decreasing terrain

Summary

Many resorts closed this weekend leaving a few open spots across the region with limited terrain. The weather warms into Tuesday and Wednesday with more unsettled and cooler weather by the weekend.

Update

The back end of the Friday-Saturday storm did deliver some snow across the region with 2-4" reported in the Green Mountains by Sunday morning. Unfortunately, scattered rain showers led to dreary skiing on Sunday afternoon on softening surfaces. As we roll into the second half of April, the weekday and full closures have also started with limited terrain open.

Area open at resorts based on reports received on Monday morning. Who is left? From north to south in Vermont: Jay, Stowe, Sugarbush, Killington, and Mount Snow. Bretton Woods, Sunday River, and Sugarloaf round out the rest in New Hampshire and Maine.

The Mount Mansfield snow stake has also finally dropped back below normal and will likely now continue its seasonal decline through the rest of the month and into May.

The week ahead has some rain showers on Monday as a cold front crosses the region. High pressure will take over on Tuesday and Wednesday and should produce some fairly nice weather with temperatures climbing through the 40s on the open slopes to near 50F by Wednesday afternoon under mostly sunny skies. Our next chance of rain arrives on Thursday, but it will remain "unsettled" and cooler into the weekend.

The unsettled weather in the models on Saturday and Sunday is associated with a trough of cold air aloft and post-frontal air mass that has upslope potential across the mountains. Some snow may be possible in the Greens and Whites, but otherwise cloudy and cooler weather keeps the melt away from one more weekend. We have 0-1" in our OpenSnow forecast at Killington with snow levels above ~1800 feet on Saturday.

The New England Daily Snow is slowly winding down operations for the season into the back half of April. I will post a couple more updates on the snow pack and open terrain for the next week or so and wrap with a season summary sometime in the next week or so. In the meantime, look for post frequencies every other to every couple days.

Thanks for reading.
