Final Post of the 2023-2024 Season

Summary

Parts of the Alps continue to see heavy snow as another storm is on tap for the weekend. Significant snow totals are expected in Zermatt through midweek. A break is expected later next week and into the weekend with more active weather mid-month.

Short Term Forecast

Saturday - Tuesday

A series of storms will move through the western Alps through Tuesday, bringing heavy snow and big accumulations. From Saturday through Monday morning, it will be snowing very heavily, and operations will be impacted. Winds continue to be strong on Saturday as well but will decrease a bit on Saturday night.

Expect 15 - 30 cms during the day on Saturday, and another 15 - 30 cms by Sunday morning. Moderate to heavy snow continues on Monday, with 10 - 20 cm expected during the day. The snow ramps up again Sunday night, dropping another 15 - 30 cm by Monday morning.

More snow is on tap for Monday as well, with 10 - 20 cm likely during the day. Finally, the snow will taper to showers Monday night and continue through Tuesday.

Snow levels start high, around 1800 m, but fall to around 1500 m by Tuesday.

The total snow accumulation through Friday is shown below.

Extended Forecast

After this latest storm cycle winds down early next week, ridging is expected to build in over central Europe. This would shift the storm track north and keep things dry in the Alps and Pyrenees. This pattern may stick around through the weekend, with more storms possible mid-month.
